The long-term business model for network providers is no longer sustainable. The figures simply don’t add up: the rapid growth of digital content requires a huge investment in bandwidth capacity expansion, but network providers are not receiving commensurate value. That’s why we’re focusing on application enablement – a key element of our new company strategy.

Application enablement can support our customers to create new value by exposing their network capabilities in a managed and controlled way, facilitating new business models and improving return on investment while enhancing the end-user experience.

Why should you care?

There is a tremendous opportunity to enhance the end-user experience while at the same time generating incremental revenues. To better understand end-user needs, potential demand and willingness to pay for application enabled services, Alcatel-Lucent conducted quantitative research in 15 developed countries.

Based on Bell Labs economic modeling, the cumulative value of the end users’ willingness to pay is estimated at €80 billion in those countries. While the total size of the application enablement opportunity is not yet known, this is indicative of the high potential.
